Is Sciatica to Blame for Your Pain?

Is sciatica to blame for your pain

Man grabbing back in pain.

Do you ever wake up with a dull ache in your back, hips or legs? Or, maybe a pain that seems to radiate throughout your entire lower body without rhyme or reason? It’s possible that sciatica is to blame, and the best way to get rid of sciatic pain is to understand its root cause.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatic pain results when the sciatic nerve is compressed, irritated, or inflamed. Common culprits can be herniated discs, misaligned spinal bones, tense or tight muscles, as well as an injury to or near the nerve. As the longest nerve in your body, it runs from the lower back through the hips, buttocks and down into each leg. As it touches so many crucial parts of your body, it’s easy to see how it can become irritated.

Sciatic pain can also be triggered by things like:

  • Unsupportive shoes
  • Sitting on a full back pocket—i.e., one with a phone, keys or wallet in it resulting in an uneven seated position
  • Stress

How to Get Sciatica Under Control

The goal of care with us will be to improve the way your body is functioning, restoring its ability to heal itself naturally through focused, gentle care.

Not only can we provide specific adjustments, but we’ll also recommend various stretches and exercises to help you manage and overcome the discomfort.

We look forward to seeing you in the practice soon!

Dr. Christopher Quigley

“I was majoring in chemistry at Villanova University when my path turned to chiropractic. I was going on interviews to be a pharmaceutical sales representative, and they always asked me what I wanted to be doing in five years. My answer was always the same: “I want to be helping people, enjoying my work, while making a difference.”

Before Back Surgery: What Three Important Studies Say About Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression

The number that should stop every elective-surgery patient in their tracks is 94%.
In a large 2017 Journal of Pain Research study of 1,842 people who had undergone lumbar spine surgery, 94% reported some degree of residual low-back pain. That does not mean 94% had severe pain, nor does it mean 94% of the operations were surgical failures. But for an invasive procedure that many patients understandably hope will eliminate their back pain, the persistence of any low-back pain in such a large proportion of respondents is difficult to dismiss.
The same study found that 20.6% met the researchers’ criteria for failed back surgery syndrome —roughly one out of every five patients. Residual numbness was reported by 69.8%, cold sensations by 43.3%, and paresthesia such as tingling or abnormal sensations by 35.3%.
